Autumn Collages

Autumn is officially here and the changes have begun -
leaves changing colour
gold, orange, red and yellow
cooler and darker nights
pumpkins, squash
Thanksgiving in Canada around the corner.

Tonight I created 2 collages celebrating fall:

This fits in with :

the Craft Barn's alpha dictionary challenge  G for gold and O for orange
and
Inspiration Avenue's "Celebrating Fall" challenge

A new challenge  at Tag Along "Autumn Glory". Love this quote - so appropriate for fall.

Dream

With the Quote "seize the day" percolating for a while, and looking at the dictionary tonight for "D" possibilities, the word DREAM fit both challenges. They worked together.

(Gelli paper background, handmade paper cloud, a photo of myself at 28 - when dreams and living were big - need to recapture that!)

New Challenges

This week at Collage Obsession the theme was "A page in a Travel Journal". I had been just looking through photos from our trip to British Columbia 5 years ago and got out a bag of mementos and flyers from our trip.
I chose Vancouver Island's Victoria - a beautiful place where we toured for several days before driving north through parts of the island. I would return in a flash if I could.( Loved all the places I saw in BC for that matter.)

The Alpha Dictionary challenge this time was "T" and after finishing the above collage, I knew that totem pole would be my choice for T. I have always had a love of native art and culture. The totem pole is unique and so significant to the culture of the Northwest Coast Natives.

At Inspiration Avenue this week, we are asked to "Show and Tell"

There are several pieces that I hold dear to my hear for several reasons.

The first is the mixed media collage I completed on my mom and her heritage. I took a weeklong course and this was the final piece.

The first  and only oil paintings I have done were 2 of flowers. They hang in our bedroom. One is red, the other blue.

I took several courses at Haliburton School of Fine Arts over 10 years ago. It was the go to place with my children for many years.
I took a  watercolour course and this was my favourite:

The following year I took a watercolour/collage course and loved it. I was able to recycle some of my watercolours into this collage:

Alpha Dictionary Challenge - B

Today a new letter was posted for the "Alpha Dictionary Challenge" at The Craft Barn:  B.

As I thought about the letter, the word balance struck me as the word I needed to focus on. Looking up quotes, I rediscovered Robert Fulghum's quote:

"Be aware of wonder. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some."
What perfect words as I leave teaching for retirement!

(A gelli paper background of course!)

Check here to see how others created with "B".

U for Unique

Alpha Dictionary - U
This week at "The Craft Barn",  U is the letter for the Alpha Dictionary Challenge.

I chose "unique" and thought of my Aunt Jessie, my godmother and my Mother's older sister.
She was like a second mom to me and was so special. She was also an exceptional artist, creating beautiful pieces with rosemaling. (Norwegian folk art) She was also a seamstress and a wonderful friend.. This is my tribute to her.

(I have used gelli prints for the background)

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

With the start of ICAD (Index Card a Day for June and July through "Daisy Yellow"), I have been making more time for art and thoroughly enjoying these small projects.
(Scroll down if you are interested for my other 8 cards, as well as other projects this week)

ICAD #9

I had discovered another challenge  (Circle of Art) yesterday and it really appealed to me. Every Friday a quote is posted and you are asked to create something in response to it. Check here for more information.
I decided to create an ICAD  card for it:

Again I have used gelli papers, this time scraps in a collage as the backdrop for this great quote by Van Gogh.

The quote inspired me as well to create a tribute to Terry Fox, one of the few true heroes in our time.
I had just finished reading the YA novel "Run" by Eric Wilson today and loved it.
I can still remember watching Terry run across Ontario and then having to stop his run as the cancer had returned. Every year for the past 30 years I have taken part in a run at a school I have been in. The children are always so moved by his story and want to help run the "Marathon of Hope".

This has always been one of my favourite quotes of his. It is so true.

R is for Rose

This week at the Craft Barn, the Alpha Dictionary challenge is R.

I chose R is for rose, in memory of Joanne, a dear sister of a dear friend.

The background is a gelli print (I never get tired of creating these!).

Be sure to check here for ways that others have created with R.
