Sunday Citar

How we look at our days, at our challenges and problems does have an effect on our lives.

"Difficult times have helped me understand better than before how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way and that so many things that one goes worrying about are of no importance whatsoever." ~Isak Dinesen

"Treasure this day, and treasure yourself.
Truly, neither will ever happen again." ~
Ray Bradbury

Each moment is a new beginning,
Make your next one count.

What we do today is what matters most." ~Buddah

Sunday Citar

Sunday Citar is an opportunity to share an inspiring quote and lovely art or photos.

I came across this quote recently and it is so true.

"It's only with the heart that one can see rightly.
What is essential is invisible to the eye."

Happy Mother's day and Sunday Citar

Happy Mother's Day one and all!

A day to honour our moms and those women who have been like mother, a day to remember those not with us.
The following are quotes that speak of all the love and thankfulness we feel for our moms.

"All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother
~ Abraham Lincoln

"God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.”
~Rudyard Kipling
"Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever."
~ Unknown.

"That best academy, a mother's knee."
~ James Russell Lowell

Sunday Citar

We should consider every day lost in which we have not danced at least once.

- Nietzsche, philosopher

Joy in the everyday - we need to do this. An article at Sparkpeople shared a brief article on this as well as the above quote. Here it is:
"Finding and celebrating the joy in life. Each day is a new chance to find joy and to dance. If you let it pass or think it useless, the chance is gone and you'll never get it back. When was the last time you played? Or just did something for the sheer fun of it? Joy is not found in the world around you, it's within yourself. You can make your own joy, especially during those dark times when you need to really feel alive again. Fun and play are healthy antidotes to taking life--and ourselves--too seriously. They're proven boosters of immune systems and mental health and make life worth the trouble. So do the twist. Sing in the shower. Learn a magic trick. Watch a cartoon. Challenge some kids to a game. Don't let a single day go to waste. "

Sunday Citar

Earlier in the week I had written about the robin's nest on our ladder, which seemed to have been deserted by the birds (For ABC Wednesday) . Well, they are back and there are now 3 blue eggs in the nest. I have gotten a few pictures.
Every time we open the sliding door we disturb the mom - who flies off and scolds us from the neighbouring roof. It won't be long before she will tolerate us on the porch, as long as we don't come too close to the nest (going by last year).

So, for Sunday Citar this week, I'd like to share photos, quotes and a poem about robins/nests and eggs.

(The strange nest)

(Mom back on the nest)

(The 3 eggs)

In the broken nest there are no whole eggs. ~ Chinese Proverb

Faith is putting all your eggs in God's basket, then counting your blessings before they hatch. ~ Ramona C. Carroll
God gives all birds their food but does not drop it into their nests. ~Danish proverb
Conscience is the nest where all good is hatched.~ Welsh Proverb
Nest Eggs
Birds all the summer day
Flutter and quarrel
Here in the arbour-like
Tent of the laurel.
Here in the fork
The brown nest is seated;
For little blue eggs
The mother keeps heated.
While we stand watching her
Staring like babies,
Safe in each egg
are the Bird's little babies.
Soon the frail eggs
they shall Chip,
and upspringing
Make all the April woods
Merry with singing.

Robert Louis Stevenson

Sunday Citar

Ever since listening to Rafe Esquith at a conference over a week ago, his words and beliefs have been percolating in my mind. I bought his book "Teach Like Your Hair is On Fire" (what an image!) and read it.

For Sunday Citar this week I would like to share some of his wisdom - not only does it apply to teaching but to how we parent and treat others.

"I want my students to love to read. Reading is not a subject. Reading is a foundation of life, an activity that people who are engaged with the world do all the time. ... If a child is going to grow into a truly special adult - someone who thinks, considers other points of view, has an open mind, and possesses the ability to discuss great ideas with other people - a love of reading is an essential foundation."

"...if we ask great things of our children, we must show them we believe great things are possible. Make every effort to remove fear from your classroom. Be fair. Be reasonable."

"... never use fear as a shortcut for education. '

Rafe uses Lawrence Kohlberg's Six Levels of Moral Development to teach children what he wanted them to learn.

"I quickly incorporated the Six Levels into my class, and today they are the glue that holds it together. Trust is always the foundation, but the Six Levels are the building blocks that help my kids grow as both students and people."

Here is a video clip from a lecture he gave. Check it out here.

Sunday Citar

It has been awhile since I joined Sunday Citar. But lately, I have come across some wonderful quotes and this is a great place to share them. (Here are flowers to brighten the days of winter!)

Don't ask yourself what the world needs;
ask yourself what makes you come alive.
And then go and do that.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
~Attributed to Howard Thurman

"Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live."

"Every day holds the possibility of a miracle "~ Elizabeth David

New Affirmation and Sunday Citar

The affirmation letter this week is R.

As I began to read Chapter 7 "Treats" of "The Joy Diet", treats seemed to relate to rewards. I had cut out the words "royal rewards" a while ago and as I searched for collage elements, this phrase jumped out at me.
So this week I will be seeking rewards/treats - treats like music, hugs, chocolate, books, flowers. Throughout the week I will explore more and I will be sure to reward myself!

Sunday Citar is a chance to share something that caught your eye, an incredible quote or a new find.

While visiting blogs last night I came across a beautiful quote by Pablo Casals (1876-1973).

"Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again.

And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France.

When will we also teach them what they are?

We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are?

You are a marvel. You are unique.

In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you.Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.

You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything.

Yes, you are a marvel.

And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?

You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children."

What a great message!

Sunday Citar

The more you explore in BlogLand, the more you discover. From one blog to another and then you catch site of something new.
Today I discovered "Sunday Citar" and it resonated with me. I knew it fit in with what I was trying to do with my affirmations.

Tabitha of "Fresh Mommy Blog" asks us to share an inspiring quote that effects us in some way - whether it is tears or laughter! (Be sure to check out other great quotes at blogs listed there)

Here are several quotes that have meaning for me:
"There are only two ways to live your life.
One is as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as though everything is a miracle."
Albert Einstein

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs.
Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do that.
Because what the world needs are people who have come alive."
Howard Thurman (civil rights activist and theologian)

"Let the beauty you love, be what you do."

Rumi
