Wishcasting Wednesday

Trouble with my computer has limited my time online and blogging. I have missed that. After report cards are finished this weekend, we are planning to replace it! Yeah!

But the question Jamie Ridler posed today for Wishcasting Wednesday was nagging me all day. In fact, I had to get up at midnight to answer it! It is an important one, and one I plan to focus on for 2012.

What do you wish for your health & wellness?

The major wish is to lessen the pain that I experience everyday. The pain from the arthritis in my knees and hips has increased and I am limited in what medication I can take. I have names of several professionals and I have made appointments to get help.

The next wish is to lose weight. (This will help the arthritis as well.) I want to dance more regularly.

The third wish is to meditate and try yoga. Hopefully this will lower my blood pressure and stress.

Book Sharing

Several weeks ago I began to follow Multitudes on Monday. Each Monday I listed 10 things I was grateful for from the previous week. Many of those things were very personal and I did not reveal some. I am choosing now to create my gratitude list in a new journal and fill it with more personal and meaningful gratitudes.

In its place I want to share my reading for the year, as I finish a book or books for the book challenges listed on my sidebar.

In the first 2 weeks of January I have already read 5 books and enjoyed all of them.

Mystery and Suspense:

I discovered Louise Penny last year when her book "Bury Your Dead" was chosen as the "One Community One Book" for Waterloo Region. I read it, loved it and then read her next one "A Trick of the Light". As I learned more about her, I realized she had 5 other books in her series about Gamanche and the town of Three Pines.

I have now read the first 3 and am thoroughly enjoying the series. Just finished "Dead Cold" and "The Cruelest Month" over the weekend. Can't wait to read the next 2!

Each book involves a mysterious death in Three Pines, Quebec, which Gamanche and his team must solve. The townspeople are interesting and each book is building the relationships and the characters of all these people.

Books to Movie/ Off the Shelf:

While away, I read "Sarah's Key". It was excellent, yet very disturbing. The other explores a very dark chapter in France's history during World War II. The author De Rosnay, uses a back and forth, present to past, technique for this book. I can't wait to see the movie.

While at the airport, I bought another book by Tatiana De Rosnay - "A Secret Kept" and enjoyed it as well.

Non-Fiction

As part of our social justice book club, the book for January is "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I read it while away and found it an excellent read. It was an informative history of the science of growing cells.

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

I have taken a long two week break from blogging. I did get away for a birthday cruise

and had a lovely time.

This past week was a slow return to work and responsibilities. I now feel ready to get back into posting and blogging.

Art/Life Courses

I have started 2 courses that will run the whole year. Both focus on digging deep into ourselves and using art to help in that discovery. They are both very worthy courses.

Dreamboard

This past week began with the making of January's Full Wolf Moon Dreamboard. I introduced the concept (rather than resolutions) to my third grade class and they so enjoyed creating their own dreamboards.

Jamie Ridler had us ask: "What am I hungry for?"

As I created my dreamboard words and inages were easy to find

In the month and year ahead I seek to pursue good health and to just "go for it". Art, books, and photography are necessary for me.

It is a wonderful life and I have to hold onto that.

I also have to really focus on decluttering this year.

Multitudes on Monday

The list that never ends - what a lovely way to describe the list of what we are thankful for. These gifts that enrich our lives so often come from the heart and fill our lives with love and wonder.

This past week I am so thankful for:

81. all the Christmas cards with news from family and friends

82. hearing from all my children and making plans for Christmas

83. winning 2 giveaways - a book and a planner

84. a lovely supper together at East Side Mario's

85. still holding hands when we walk, after 10 years together

86. watching "It's a Wonderful Life" with my husband

87. celebrating the 2 oldest grandsons' birthdays on Saturday

88. sitting on the couch, looking at the tree all lit up, with our cat on my lap and Christmas music playing

89. feeling surrounded by angels when I drive the 30 min. to work each way, especially in iffy weather

90. being able to help others in need

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

A week til Christmas! Wishing everyone peace and love during this final week before Christmas and all through the Christmas holidays!

This past week has been a hectic one -again! At least my hubby is on the mend and back to work. At school we are busily preparing for our Christmas concert - singing 4 multicultural songs about light and peace.

I am trying to finish Christmas cards - got out half of them today. The past few weeks put my agenda for Christmas way out of whack. Oh well - at least the rest of the cards should be mailed by Christmas!

I haven't even started my baking yet - which in some ways is good as I would probably have been eating too many by now.

Art this past week was limited to viewing rather than actually doing.

I won 2 giveaways this past week for which I am extremely grateful and excited.

1. The book "The 12 Secrets of Highly Successful Women" by Gail McMeekin", a giveaway hosted by Jamie Ridler.

I loved Gail's first book and I know I will love this one. A big Thanks to Jamie and Gail!

2. A planner pad from Glenda Myles, of "Myles Ahead", who is hosting a wonderful "planning for 2012" workshop over 4 weeks. I am loving it!

The Artist's Way

Today is the last check-in. We have now finished the book, with this last chapter. Chapter 12 is very encouraging.

Several quotes really struck me:

"Creativity requires faith."

"Each of us has an inner dream that we can unfold if we will just have the courage to admit it. And the faith to trust our own admissions."

"Our truest dreams for ourselves is always God's will for us."

"There is a path for each of us. When we are on the right path, we have a surefootedness."

I love the idea of the God Jar and placing all our doubts, fears, worries into it. Then we can truthfully say - "God's got it".

I now will have to reread the book and complete many of the tasks I skimmed over. This will be a 2012 task. I also intend to do a much better job of the morning papers as I reread this book.

It has been a very worthwhile journey through the book with such a supportive group of people. Thank you to all of them who have made this a wonderful journey of discovery.

We have new hosts for Shadow Shot Sunday with a new logo!

Here it is mid December and we were getting crazy weather - lots of sun too. Couldn't resist the tree shadows across the street.

This little angel was a fundraiser for a local business and I couldn't resist the faint shadow she cast.

This last shot was taken before I put on the flash - I like this shot though of our old cat cast in darkness.

5. Read Canadian Award Winners

I would like to be a "Can-Lit Lover" and so I will be reading one book from each of the five award lists (check the website for all the lists)

I’ve been trying to incorporate more Canadian writing into my 2012 reading list so I’ve decided to spotlight winners of Canadian literary prize.
I’ve chosen what I think are the most heralded of Canadian book honours: the Governor-General’s Award for Literature and the Giller Prize. Because the Giller hasn’t been around all that long, I’ve added in the prestigious Canadian Authors’ Association Literary Award. I’ve picked the main fiction category in all of those.
In addition, the Amazon.ca (formerly Books in Canada) First Novel Award is widely-known and, over the years, has brought to the forefront many who have become major players in Canadian literature.
Finally, I can’t host this challenge and not promote my adopted home, Nova Scotia, so I’m also drawing attention to the Atlantic Book Awards’ Thomas Head Raddall Atlantic Fiction Prize.
Here’s the scoop on the ways you can enter:

Toe-dipper: one book from the list of award winners of each of “main” prizes: the Governor-General’s Award, the Giller Prize, and the CAA Prize. (Total 3 books)

6. Mystery & Suspense Challenge 2012

I thoroughly enjoy a good mystery. I have read all of Sue Grafton books (except for the last which I am sure is under the tree!), most of Kathy Reichs and am just beginning reading Louise Penny's.

I am choosing the first level and so plan to read 12 books for the year - one a month.

Welcome to the Mystery & Suspense Challenge 2012! I didn't do very well this year (again!) even though it is my own challenge, but I hope to do better this in 2012. However, it seems many of you did very well, so congratulations for completing the challenge. For those of you who were more like me, here's your chance to beat this challenge!

7. Illustrated Year 2012 in Picture Books

As a teacher I am always on the lookout for good picture books that can inspire children to write and to think. This challenge is a natural fit.

I plan to select Level 3 and read 24 picture books during the year.

A few of us participated in my picture book reading challenge during 2011. I had a fun time with it and wanted to give it another try. I love picture books, and was collecting them long before I became an elementary librarian. Sometimes it's the story, sometimes the illustrations, and a lot of the time it's the fun of reading them out loud to kids that makes picture books so enjoyable. I thought it would be fun to create a reading challenge for this shorter, though just as entertaining, genre. Picture books are a great way to share stories and the experience of reading with children. If you're reading the books with kids, I encourage you to add their opinion of the books as well! I love the way the family at Bookie Woogie reviews books. That being said, not all picture books are for children. Picture books for older audiences are also welcome.
I will be using the thumbnail inLinkz form for participants to link their monthly reviews to. This way we can see the books you've reviewed!

Book Challenges for 2012

While visiting a new blog, I rediscovered book challenges. I had signed up last year but life (and especially school) interrupted the direction of my reading. I still read, but needed different books.

There are so many book challenges this year and I am eager to take part in several of them. One in particular (Off the Shelf) will help me clear my shelf of many books that are just gathering dust!

My biggest weakness is books. I have well over 1000 here at home and an equal number at school. Every time we enter Costgo, I vow I will not buy another book. I usually end up with 2!

I keep lists of books I want to read and love getting recommendations. I always have several books on the go.

Here are the challenges I am joining in on. (I will probably post over several days or this post will be way too long!)

What I especially like about these are that they're supportive of what you do accomplish. I hope in the end that I have read many different genres and that my shelves have room for new books!

My goal is to read 15 books (Trying level). I will be able to use many of these books I hope with other challenges. The goal though is to clear my shelf!!

This is the second year running for Off The Shelf!, with last year being an overwhelming success (over 300 participants), and we hope this year it does just as well!

2. Non-Fiction Non-Memoir

I want to read more non-fiction this year and already have a number of books I want to read (including the Steve Jobs' biography)
This may be the only way I will achieve a Master's degree (lol), so I am aiming high on this one!

Non-Fiction Non-Memoir Reading Challenge

I've decided to host a challenge to motivate myself and others to read more nonfiction. To make it more of a challenge, the Non-Fiction Non-Memoir Reading Challenge will exclude memoirs, which seem to be the most read type of nonfiction among the book blogs I follow. Instead, we'll focus on learning about a variety of different topics and discovering new facts. The challenge will run from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012.
What Counts:
- Books can be any format (bound, ebook, audio) but must be written for adults or young adults.
- Books can cover many different topics, including science, technology, religion, sociology, business, biography, politics, economics, history, food, art/design, etc.- How-to, self-help and travel books are permitted, as long as you actual read them cover to cover, and don't just use them as a reference.
- Crossovers with other challenges are permitted.

What Does Not Count:
- Reference books, cookbooks and instruction manuals that are not meant to be read cover to cover
- Essays and articles
- How-to, self-help or travel books that are not read cover to cover
- Memoirs, journals and autobiographies
- Books written for children
- Re-reads don't count since the point is to learn something new

Levels:
Elementary - 5 nonfiction books
Diploma - 10 nonfiction books
Bachelor's Degree - 15 nonfiction books
Master's Degree - 25 nonfiction books

I love the idea of this challenge. Most of the time I read the book before I watch the movie.
Here are my choices so far:
1. Movie is more famous than the book: "Time Traveller's Wife"
2. to a TV series: "Jane Eyre"
3. Main characters are animals: "Silverwing" by Ken Oppel
4. with favourite actress: "Julie and Julia"
5. book classic made into a movie after 1990 : "Emma"

7. from an author not of your home country: ?
8. about love and you'll probably cry: ?
9. social issue: "The Help"
10. story from over a 100 years ago: "The Pillars of the Earth"
11. playing in Asia/Africa or future: "Memoirs of a Geisha"
12. movie coming out in 2012: "The Hunger Games"

The goal for this challenge is to read a book/ watch a movie in each of the 12 categories, which are further down, during the year of 2012 (01.01.2012 – 31.12.2012) + 1 bonus category, if someone can’t find a book in one of the 12 categories..
This means: 12 books + movies in 12 months, as a result 1 book/ 1 movie per month. (Book can be read/ movie can already been watched – but just one of each)

4. Memorable Memoirs
I love memoirs and this challenge looks perfect.
I am aiming for: the Autobiographer level.

It's back again for the 3rd year! If you love memoirs or if you simply want to add more memoirs into your reading life, then the 2012 Memorable Memoirs Reading Challenge is for you!

What Counts as A Memoir?I know there's a difference between memoir and autobiography, but for this challenge, we're going to define memoir as a record of events written by a person having intimate knowledge of them and based on personal observation.

Published letters, diaries, journals, autobiographies, nonfiction books on the craft of writing memoirs ... in my book, they all count as Memorable Memoirs for this challenge. (Generally, biographies don't, but I could always be convinced.)

The Rules:Books, e-books, audiobooks, ARCs, NetGalley books are allowed.

Overlaps with other challenges are also allowed.

Re-reads are allowed.No need to create a list of books in advance (but if you want to, please feel free!)

You don't need a blog to participate.

You must select a level. You can increase your level, but you can't go back down.

t is time once again to express gratitude for the many wonderful things that have happened this past week. It is sometimes the simplest things that bring the most happiness.

This week , I am very grateful for:

72. receiving Christmas cards from friends and hearing all their news

75. hearing from my youngest, phoning just to say hello

Full Cold Moon Dreamboard

Tonight is the full moon and time to create the last dreamboard of 2011.

Jamie Ridler hosts the creation of monthly dreamboards and it has become a very important practice.

At the noon moon I started collecting pictures and words. What I* think I will use often changes quite a bit when it comes time to create the dreamboard. It certainly did tonight.

Finding the nautilus picture changed the direction of the board. I had read "Gift from The Sea" by Anne Morrow Lindbergh this summer and I was captivated by her use of shells to explore women's lives.

The nautilus is a symbol for expansion and it seemed to fit with the idea of doing more, of looking for miracles, for celebrating.

I see the end of 2011 and 2012 as a year to continue making small steps forward. Of trying new things and expecting the best. I turn 60 before the next full moon and wanted this dreamboard to look to the new year.

I want 2012 to be my most creative year yet.

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

It has been an unsettling week. My hubby had surgery Monday, was in hospital for 2 nights and then went back yesterday. He is doing okay - just some complications. We missed 2 special Christmas celebrations and decorating our tree. At least it is up - with lights. And we have gotten some extra time together. Even sat and watched "Larry Crowne" last night.

I have read a lot this week ( I discovered and read "Kate Morton's "The Distant Hours"), with just a bit of art done .

After 2 1/2 days away from school, my class were quite happy to have me back Thurs. (and I was very happy to be back).

Now we just have to wait for follow-up and for my hubby time to heal.

The Artist's Way

I did a few more tasks with Chapter 11. It was by far the most enjoyable.

My journal is slowly filling up with lists and tasks done. I still have to go back and do a number of tasks throughout the book. My art dates were the few times I actually got to create art.

The morning papers still elude me. I was able to write a few times at night - still my preferred time.

It is hard to believe there's only one chapter to go.

Heart Exchange

I took part in the "Heart Exchange" through Louise Gale's blog. What a lovely experience. We each had a partner for whom we made something from our heart to theirs. I received a gorgeous heart book from Jenna. What a thoughtful gift - one that I am going to use to inspire me in 2012!

Planning for 2012

There is so much available to help in planning for 2012.

I just signed up for Ali Edwards "One Little Word 2012" online course, which will run all year. I have been choosing a word to help guide me with intention throughout the new year for a couple of years.

For 4 weeks in December, at "Myles Ahead", you can start a weekly process of visioning for the year ahead.

The 100 questions exercise was very interesting and has resulted in 10 questions/themes I hope to pursue in 2012.

Reverb 2011 has begun again, although through a different organizer than last year.

With all three of these groups, the primary goal has been to choose a word of intention for 2012. I made a preliminary list of 20 words and have finally chosen my word. Actually, it is one small phrase, as it encompasses so much of what I want 2012 to be.

I turn 60 in early January and so begins a a new decade, one that I want to be healthy, eventful, and exciting.

The phrase is "Seize each day" from the Latin "Carpe Diem". (A fellow teacher has this as her license plate and I always feel it deep inside when I see it.) It can mean so much. I hope it forces me to reach out and do more and see more.

The 2 ATCs I created above hold 2 quotes that very much fit this phrase.

Yesterday, I spent most of the day at the hospital, as my husband had surgery. Scheduled for 4pm it didn't happen until 5:30 and I didn't get to see him til 8. He seems to be doing okay and may come home today.

It is strange though coming home to an empty house.

I missed posting my gratitudes and with his surgery, I really need to:

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up / The Artist's Way

This past week has passed in a flurry of parent interviews, volleyball practices and a tournament, and a wee bit of time for art. The interviews went well, although not all parents showed up. It made me think of an article from the NY Times I read this week about how we need better parents. A very interesting read.

The volleyball tournament turned out disappointing for the kids at the end as they lost the semi-final round. Cheating by another team was not addressed and my group were very discouraged. It definitely was a learning experience - for all of us! They did extremely well though. I did write a long letter to the coordinators - but haven't heard back.

The Artist's Way

I am back on track, finally. Chapter 11 was filled with wonderful messages:

"Creativity is oxygen for our souls."

Creativity is its own reward.""Creativity requires action and part of that action must be physical."

"As artists we are spiritual sharks."

"I need to create what wants to be created."

"Creativity is not a business."

This chapter was inspiring and so positive. I love the idea of a creativity notebook and listing the wishes for 7 areas of our lives. I intend to do this, but connect it with the planning for 2012 (see below)

Lots of nurturing is encouraged for the week ahead and I intend to do that.

As for morning papers - that still is not consistent and is done at night, to unload thoughts and ideas so I can sleep! My artist date continues to be time to create.

It is hard to believe that we are almost done the book. This group of people who have shared the journey are so supportive. Be sure to check out Paula's blog for others of the group.

Wishcasting Wednesday

Each week Jamie poses a question that has us look deep into our hearts and minds. This week is no different.

As I thought about it, I realized that what has been on my mind a lot recently has been my upcoming birthday and what the years ahead will bring. Turning 50 was not difficult - I was getting remarried that year and had much to anticipate.

Turning 60 though is different. I had hoped to be retired and healthy. I am still teaching and probably will for another year or two at least. I have been battling health issues for awhile and am so tired.

So for my greatest wish - to enter my 60s with a positive outlook, with health, creativity, friendships and love, and a passion for living and making a difference.

From Diane Ackerman, comes a quote that resonates with me:

101 in 1001 Days

Friday November 11th saw the end of my 101 Things to do in 1001 Days.

When I started the list back in Feb.2009, it was a challenge to just make the list, let alone think 2 + years into the future. But the time has past and I did accomplish many things on my list. Not all of them, but a lot. Did I think it worthwhile? Yes, very much so. It helped me set goals and although not all were met, I believe I accomplished more because there was a list.

This quote is quite true:

"The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal.

The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach." by Benjamin E. Mays

So today I have begun a new list of goals, some from my first list and many new ones. The next 1001 days will pass, whether I plan or not - so I want to reach for many new things - especially retirement! And fittingly enough, the 1001st day falls on my Mom's birthday in 2014!

Nov. 10 was the full moon and I created a dreamboard for the coming month. I have been creating one every month for some time and find it a valuable practice. Jamie Ridler hosts these full moon dreamboards every month.

Make bad art (it's getting me in the mood tho for the holidays!)

Just Do it:

I had seen this heron in an old, old copy of "Flat Tail" and I loved the lines.
(I love herons as well) So I attempted a sketch - on a day when I really didn't feel too creative.

The Artist's Way

I am a week behind! I finally finished Chapter 9 for our group that is hosted by Paula.

I love the message in this chapter that enthusiasm and play are paramount. Yes we need to have discipline, but the joy must be there in the creating.

I enjoyed the task of describing and visualizing what my future life will be like.

"I am an artist and an art teacher, holding classes for children".

Yes, I can see it! And I am working on steps to get there.

When the task asked us to chose an artist totem I knew what it had to be:an art doll I created a few years ago for a Visual Arts teaching course I took.

She has many of the symbols I associate with myself. She now has a place of honour on my shelves.

This week I will forge ahead with Chapter 10.

Shadow Shot Sunday

After snow flurries and coolldd weather yesterday, it was a nice surprise to find a bright sunny morning today. A perfect day to track down shadows!

I experimented with some coloured glass and loved the effects (thanks to Sylvia for her inspiration!)

And I checked around the house for some other shadows.

Full Frost Moon Dreamboard

Time of the full moon!

This month it is the full frost moon and as Jamie Ridler points out:

"It is time to deepen our dreams, to grow powerful roots of support as we move into the colder months. Allow that fresh chill in the air to wake you up to your dreams. Let’s choose to give our energy to the things that nourish our hearts and our lives, while releasing what no longer serves us. Let’s fill not only our dreamboards but also our calendars and lists with what we dream of. "

As I created my dreamboard this month, some images and words reappeared -the butterfly, art, be healthy, dance.

But there was also some new ones - the native whale,

and the desire to retire (sooner than later) and the need to have money to retire.

As this Chinese wish states, I seek happiness, longevity and wealth (although I would definitely add health.) I want to "live brightly", with zest and "full of colour".

Today Jamie Ridler gain poses a very intriguing, seemingly simple question:

As I thought about it, I thought of people in the past who I might have liked to have tea with - people like Katherine Hepburn, Virginia Woolf, Mother Teresa, Corrie Ten Boom or Rachel Carson for example - To listen to their accumulated wisdom, to hear their stories.

But I realized that what I would like most is to reconcile the women in our family, to gather the sisters, daughters, cousins and aunts together; to share our hurts and feelings and wishes and needs; to expose the past and wash it away with pot after pot of tea; to cry and hug and feel each others' pain; to reconnect in love.

Time for Sunday Weekly Wrap -up - my look at the week that was.

AEDM

This month is "Art Every Day Month" - a challenge offered by Leah at Creative Every Day.

I am enjoying working through Leah's Survival Guide. She provides a prompt each day, to spark inspiration and motivation. It is also a chance to see more of her artwork.

Here are a few of the pieces I have created and a summary of what I've done:

Nov. 2: Watercolour Horse - inspired from a card from Saratoga

Nov. 3: Finished ATCs for a swap (theme was Stamps/Scrapbooking)

I have read Chapter 9 but have not done much on the tasks . My artist's date has been my daily time for creating or working on my art space.

Morning papers - nil. I did re-read those I have done this round and the round before (a year ago). It is not surprising, I guess , that some of the same issues arise.

Now that reports will be out of the way I can devote more time to actually working through this chapter.

AEDM -Day 1

Today brings Art Every Day Month with Leah of Creative Every Day. I have done the challenge twice before and look forward to doing the challenge again. The idea is to create art or something creative every day throughout November.

I am making the commitment to be creative every day, to give myself time each day to make art and enjoy the process, not matter what medium I use.

I hope to try some new things but also work on one project: quote cards.

I will continue creating ATCs - I have a number of swaps to work on.

I am working on finishing "The Artist's Way".

I want to sketch daily.

I will continue with photography and my challenges related to that.

I look forward to the creative community who participate in this challenge. I plan to share once a week, on Sundays.

GPP - Crusade 56: I Believe

Michelle Ward hosts a monthly crusade at GPP. This past month was "I'm a Believer". I have taken part in a number of crusades in the past and felt this one shouldn't be missed.

Michelle listed a number of questions about life as an artist. She asked that we journal about our beliefs about art and being an artist.

Most of my life I never called myself an artist or felt that I was creative. I could copy very well. I have fond memories of drawing cartoon characters.

But then I discovered Haliburton School of Fine Arts and for 7 summers, I spent a week or two with my children there and we all took courses. I took courses in basketry, silk screening, design, collage, watercolour. It made me realize that I loved to create and needed to create. I continue to take courses as I can.

Here are the questions from Michelle:

"Tell us about the artist you are. Tell us in your own way the importance of being an artist - do you have a philosophy or are you just happy to be spending time making cool stuff.?"

As I said above I have a need now to create. I know that I need to develop more technical skills.

As a teacher for 30 years at the elementary level, I know art is crucial for children, especially those who struggle with reading. They are definitely focused on the journey, the process. I really believe children (and adults as well for that matter) need to create, to make things, to draw, to make messes, to have fun.

"Are you a perpetual student and/or workshop attendee? Or are you mostly self-taught?"

I have taken a number of courses and I will continue to do so. I follow certain blogs and take part in certain challenges and lessons.

"Do you participate in swaps?"

I take part in the swaps at "ATCsforall. I really enjoy creating ATCs. I have tried different techniques and many different challenges. Creating art on a small scale isn't as intimidating and the community is very supportive.

I also take part in numerous art challenges: Shadow Shot Sunday, ABC Wednesday, Wishcasting Wednesday, Skywatch Fridays, to name a few.

"Do you find time to work daily or do you squeeze in a precious few moments whenever you can? "

I try to create several times a week. I know I should be drawing daily to improve my skills but haven't the time. For the month of November, I want to take part in AEDM at Creative Every Day. It is a great challenge every year.

" Do you have a studio space or do you work at the dining table? "

A little of both. I am slowly creating my studio, although I still do art at the dining room table.

Tell us about what you do, have done, and aspire toward. Do you paint canvases? Make books? Make jewelry...ATCs...Ceramics...Knit? Our need to be creative usually spills into several arenas - let us know more about you by spelling it out for us on a journal page.

These are the journal pages I created. I really believe that art needs to be a big part of our lives.

I have always been involved in crafts - I have crocheted afghans, made Christmas ornaments and decorations every year, tried new crafts.

I especially enjoy now creating:

These next few pieces were done with a watercolour course and watercolour/collage course done at Haliburton. Following an instructor made the challenge a bit easier. I would definitely love to do more watercolour.

Mixed Media Collage

This piece was created at another week long course here in Cambridge. I learned new techniques and the instructor kept pushing me to go further. Loved the final result - a homage to my Mom and her roots. This is the direction I would like to explore more of.

As I get closer to retirement (1-3 years), my dreams of spending more time creating get more and more real. When I grow up (or enter the next chapter in my life!) , I want to create daily and teach art to children. They are such a joy to work with.

As I look back on my journey, I need to acknowledge that, yes I am an artist, one who is still growing.

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up (getting back on track!)

Sunday evening is typically the time of the weekend that I spend on schoolwork - marking, preparing for the week, planning new units. Often, this time squeezes out time to reflect on the week that has passed for my "Weekly Wrap-Up". The result has been no blogging on Sundays lately. The past few weeks there has also been little art or even study of "The Artist's Way".

As I have been visiting blogs the last while, I have come across so much to think about. One has been that time is precious and we need to do what we love and to spend time each day doing something just for us.

I have missed creating and "The Artist's Way" community. So, I am re-committing myself to a daily practice of making art, taking care of my health and studying creativity.

The Artist's Way

I have been reading the chapters and am now working on Chap. 8.

I am still not doing the morning papers consistently. When they are done, I write at night to get ride of the chatter in my mind so that I can fall asleep. It works!

My artist's dates have been mostly exploring artists online. There is so much inspiration out there! (I know - I need to spend more time doing.)

Many of the tasks in Chapters 6-8 have proved interesting. I will probably go back later to do some of the ones I have not done. My little journal is filling up with notes and quotes and tasks done.

It has been a very worthwhile journey through the book this time. Mostly, it is knowing others are on the same journey and facing similar issues. I am also more accepting of not completing everything. I do what I am able, when I am able.

ATCs

This past week Ii have finished a number of ATCs. I like this format, as the cards are small and manageable (4 usually on a theme).

Shadow Shot Sunday

A week of rain and clouds results in few outdoor opportunities for shadow seeking. Throw in not feeling 100% and the result is seeking indoor shadows this morning. But even here the shadows were muted - but still shadows!

(We have inherited this horse statue - one of the many items from my father-in-law - and I love the shadow it made)

It is so easy to let life take over and let the excuse of being tired prevent me from doing so many things. I just need to do those things first and put me and my needs first on the calendar.

Giving thanks and showing gratitude regularly is a practice that has woven in and out of my life. I have kept gratitude journals many times and I have found that when I keep it up, I am more upbeat, more optimistic.

While visiting several blogs recently, I discovered Ann Voskamp, the author of "A Thousand Gifts". The idea of creating "a list that never ends" really spoke to me and I have decided to join "Multitude Mondays", starting my list of what I am thankful for this past week.

I am grateful for:

1. my husband, who shares everything and always supports me

2. my children, who are independent, loving and kind and my pride and joy

3. my extended family of step-children and grandchildren and in-laws

Full Harvest Moon Dreamboard

Today is the full moon

and at Jamie Ridler Studios, Jamie encourages us to participate in the creation of a full moon dreamboard. It is a unique and fun way to anticipate the coming month.

Jamie asked 2 questions to encourage us while we created our dreamboards:

"Under this moon, what harvest do you want to invite into your life? What would I like an abundance of?"

As I created my dreamboard, I knew that health would be one of the things I want to

continue to work on. As I went through all the pictures I had been adding this past month I was surprised at how quickly it came together.

I loved the photo of the pumpkins and the background papers. I don't usually use a lot of orange but with fall and harvest, they all fit together.

The theme of health and getting active have appeared regularly, but the words of "new body" and "priority" really made me see that I have to really work this month at making that a priority.

The pictures of books and an apple relate to school I thought and I need to focus on reports and developing skills this month. The middle photo is of a room with new flooring which we are almost finished installing. Fresh new floors, new furniture and more decluttering will be in the works this coming month.

I have found these dreamboards to be very insightful - I usually start in one direction and then get turned in a slightly different one. They do act as a focus for the month.

Here in Canada, this is a long weekend - a 3- day holiday to celebrate Thanksgiving. I usually love this weekend. A time to bake and cook and gorge on turkey dinner and pumpkin pie. Not this year. We are heading to Montreal tomorrow to clear out my father-in-law's house and we may be barbecuing steaks for Sunday's dinner. It is a seven hour drive there and back so I will be doing marking and maybe crocheting to fill the time!

While visiting "The Art of Doing Stuff", Karen had a list of things she was thankful for. A great idea!

ABC Wednesday - L is For Doris Lessing

This week at ABC Wednesday it is L we focus on.

There were many people I could have chosen - Jack Layton was my first choice, but I have written on him lately and will again.)

I settled on Doris Lessing, the British writer who received the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 2007. One of her most famous books is "The Golden Notebook".

ABC Wednesday - Kis for Helen Keller

This week at ABC Wednesday, K is the letter of the week.

It was an easy choice this week, as Helen Keller is one of my heroes. For all that she had to endure, her wisdom shines through.

Time Away - Prayers Needed

It has been almost a week since I last blogged. This week has been a roller coaster of emotions and events. School problems, renovations that are taking forever, family issues and now illness have had me pulling back from time on the computer. I have not participated in several memes I usually so enjoy. It is a strange place to be in.

This week I also heard about the death of my former hairdresser from lung cancer at age 61 and the diagnosis of a close friend's sister of lung cancer (she is 61). I turn 60 in less than 4 months and am having a wee bit of a challenge with that.

Then tonight I listened to Steve Jobs give a commencement speech at Stanford back in 2005. What an inspiring speech. His advice was to find what you love and pursue it; to stay thirsty; to connect the dots.

Then visiting another blog, I read this poem:

John O'Donohue's To Bless the Space Between Us ( the last two stanzas of his poem "A Morning Offering.")

Postponing dreams, not wasting time, doing what I love - great advice - coming from 2 very different sources.

I do believe in prayer - it has certainly helped this week. I am seeking yours in helping me lift this dark veil that seems to be closing in. I want to be positive, to be seeking new dreams. I don't like the space I am in right now.

I definitely needed Steve's words and the lines of the poem.

Full Moon Dreamboard / The Artist's Way

Tonight is the Full Corn Moon and time once again to create the full moon dreamboard. I have come to look forward to creating these visions for the month ahead.

Jamie Ridler hosts this monthly visioning. She asked us to focus on the following question as we pulled images and words together:

"What dreams do I wish to bring to fruition?"

Throughout the past month I tore magazine pages out - of things that I found appealing, whether word or picture. Then tonight I gathered all the pages and started sifting through them.

Once again, thoughts of health , Balance, exploring, connection appeared, as did art, reading, money, and school.

As I move through September and October, balance and health, home and school, discovery and connection will guide me. Anything is possible!

Chapter 5 The Artist's Way:

Time for Our check-in for this chapter - Paula has been hosting this book club and I am finally making headway!

I enjoyed the tasks in this chapter. The virtue-trap quiz was a real eye-opener. I found issues of guilt, fear and self-esteem still percolate below the surface. The lists were a good exercise as well. I do have many wishes and desires and need to work toward these.The morning papers are still not done consistently - more as I need them. They do help get rid of the negativity though.

Shadow Shot Sunday

A perfect day today to wander around St. Jacob's Market. We bought corn and had fun just looking and watching. The only thing missing was my camera. Gorgeous weather and perfect for shadows!

Here are a few I haven't shared from the past few weeks:

This is the horse statue in front of the Museum of Racing in Saratoga Springs. hard to believe - it is made of driftwood!

A few weeks ago we had visited the Blues Festival in Kitchener and here are a couple of shots from there:

The last photos are from the flood at our school yesterday! A pipe burst in the girl's washroom upstairs during afternoon recess and no one knew where the shutoff valve was (the regular custodian was absent). There was water cascading down the stairs into the front hall.

By the time the fire dept. and the board office sent someone to turn off the water, we had evacuated the school. It could have been a lot worse (as maintenance said), but there was still some damage. What an exciting way to end the first week back at school!

We were outside with over 300 kids for over an hour and a half! We were allowed in to get kids ready for home time and send them on their way.

(I noticed shadows and reflections when I was showing my husband last night - perfect for SSS!)

ABC Wednesday - H is for Rick Hansen

I am late joining in ABC Wednesday. School started this week and I have been very busy.

This week the focus is H and what better person for H than Rick Hansen. He is one of my heroes.

This year is the 25th Anniversary of the Man in Motion World Tour, when Rick wheeled around the world in his wheelchair.

He has begun a new trip across Canada with 7,000 "difference makers", in an Anniversary relay that began in Newfoundland this past Aug. 24. Check out his website for lots of information on the relay, and on spinal cord research.

Here is part of an interview he had with the Globe and Mail:

"His philosophy is evident in everything he says: Dwell not on what you don’t have, or can’t have; focus on what you have and are able to do. The attitude “wasn’t a bolt of lightening.” It came slowly with the help of mentors, friends, family members and quiet contemplation in what he calls The Rick Hansen School of Life.
“Usually the biggest demon is not out there,” he says, gesturing to the world outside his window. “It’s what is inside your head. That was one of the most profound lessons I’ve learned in my life. I would never give that up for the use of my legs,” he says without drama. "

Wishcasting Wednesday

Today at Jamie Ridler's Studio, it is once again Wishcasting Wednesday and Jamie asks :

What do you wish to say NO to?

A very interesting question! I would much rather say "yes" to new things. But, as I have been reading "The Artist's Way" with Paula's group, saying no to negative affirmations is a constant theme. It is so important to say no to those voices that tell you you can't do it, or you're not an artist, or you will fail. So, I want to say no to those internal voices and replace them with positive affirmations.

I also want to say no to negative emotions that can drag you down: guilt, fear, and especially worry. Focusing on each day and looking at the positive will help banish those negative emotions.

I want to say no to procrastination and wasting time, and to clutter.

Last week, we arrived home from our vacation to find that Jack Layton had died. He had lost his battle to cancer too early. As someone said, he was the greatest prime minister we never had. As I listened to the wonderful eulogies at his funeral, I heard many of his words of wisdom.

"Don't wait for perfect conditions - you can wait forever. Make the best with what you have."

"Always have a dream that is longer than a lifetime."

"Be loving, be hopeful, be optimistic."

"Make time for what matters most."

"Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done."

"Dream no small dreams."

So, for this last wish, I want to say no to dreaming small dreams. I look at Jack and at 61, he lived every moment to the fullest. His was a life well lived. What a wonderful role model!

ABC Wednesday - G is for Jane Goodall

This week at ABC Wednesday, G is our letter of focus. I missed E and F as I was away on holidays. (I will try to catch up later.)

Continuing with the quote theme, I decided on Jane Goodall as I have been reading about her lately. She is a very interesting, thoughtful woman.

The Artist's Way

We have finished Chapter 4 of "The Artist's Way", with the group being hosted by Paula. I read this chapter while travelling, and did a few of the tasks. The one task that I absolutely refused and felt such resistance to, was the reading deprivation. I could not even attempt it!

I have found myself over the past few weeks sorting through books and papers, and getting rid of a lot of "stuff". When I read about making these changes in this chapter, I felt on the right track. I still have more to do, but it feels good to be clearing away clutter.

I am back to doing morning papers. It does help to clear the mind. I want to start this school year off with a better morning routine and maybe this will help.

I attempted a number of the tasks with the buried dreams exercise - listing hobbies, activities and skills. Interesting lists!

I thought about a number of the tasks while I was in the car, but did not write the letters. I do intend to do this.

One artist's date took place in Lake George. There was an outdoor fair and I spent a good hour visiting art booths and seeing a lot of interesting work. I even bought a few pieces.

The second artist's date was in Saratoga Springs. I saw one artist's work and was mesmerized by the size of the pieces (well over 4 ft. tall) and the vibrant colour. I have to track him down online!

During the past 2 weeks I have not been very creative. I haven't worked on ATCs or painted and I have missed that. Travelling was enjoyable and I did take a lot of photos tho. It was fun to explore Lake George and Saratoga Springs - something we have not done in the past few visits.

But now it is time to get into school mode. I have started planning and will be going in all week to set up my classroom.

I must make time for art though - I have missed it.

On to Chapter 5 this week.

Going away for 10 days and taking time away from blogging has given me time to rest and appreciate the best of the blogging world. I truly missed those people I visit and hear from. But it also made me realize how much time I did spend online - especially in the summer. Next week marks getting back into school routines and thus, less time to blog.

Full Sturgeon Moon Dreamboard

Tonight is the full moon and at 9:00 pm it was beautiful.

Every full moon, Jamie Ridler brings us together in the creation of a Full Moon Dreamboard. This month it is the Full Sturgeon moon and Jamie asks:

As I created my dreamboard this evening, my thoughts were on the month ahead. I am already preparing for school, but am eager to continue with our vacation. Those came out in the board.

The "fresh start" and the teacher quote below it, relate to starting school in September, altho I will be in the two weeks before getting ready.

Getting healthy, trying to achieve balance and the phrase"I can" continue to surface as I work toward a healthier me. The horse represents our trip to New York.

Saying yes to new adventures and new activities appears again. And again, a balance of body, mind, spirit and love.

I had a wee bit of a challenge as the people I wished to focus on had quotes I wasn't enthralled with. Then I found Isak Dinesen. Here is some info on her:

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

It is that time of the week when I look back at what I have been focusing on creatively.

The Artist's Way

I have read Chapter 3 but have not done many of the tasks. Listing who I admire, but alive and deceased was the easiest.

The idea of being kind to oneself each day in small, concrete ways really appeals to me. It is so necessary to be kind to yourself and to give yourself permission to carve out some me time each day.

The quote "Leap and the net shall appear" is one I need to just do.

I was sporadic with the morning papers. When I do them, I do feel lighter!

This week I will get to more of the tasks and the morning papers!

My artist's date was a fun one this week. My hubby and I took in the Kitchener Blue's Fest this afternoon and had a great time. The downtown of Kitchener is blocked off to cars for 3 days and there is music at 3 different venues. We visited 2 of them.

The music was awesome, the weather beautiful and I had a chance to photograph lovely flowers and a grand old church. (see below for these photos)

Calendar Challenge
I finally finished my August calendar for the challenge at the Kathryn Wheel.

I always thing of water in August, as many of our holidays are near water. The stars represent both stars in the sky (which I tend to notice more in August) and starfish.

At first I thought I had no door to open, that I had expressed all my wishes lately. But then the image of myself, standing on the outside looking in, came to me. I realized that this is a feeling I have had most of my life - with my family and later at school and at work. I am friendly with people and I have a couple of close friends who live far away. Moving here 6 years ago was difficult and I still feel like the new kid on the block.

So, the door I wish to open is the door of friendships and kindred spirits. I want to enter that world of laughter and caring and sharing and joy.

I am working through the book with a great group hosted by Paula of "Happy Snappy".

Throughout this book are numerous quotes from other people as well as Julia's. But it is her quotes that I wish to share with you. Here is a sampling of her wisdom:

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

Time once again to recap what I have done in the previous week.

I started a course (She Had Three Hearts) with Christy Tomlinson and am loving it. There is sooo much information, just in the first week alone. The concept of a woman having 3 hearts is intriguing and besides journaling about this I am learning new techniques. I have been watching the videos (28 for the first week alone!), so have only done a bit of experimenting. More next week!

Summer of Colour

This week at "Twinkle Twinkle" for the "Summer of Color" we were to work with orange. I worked on the colour collage and the tints as usual. I am really enjoying this and I am going to use this with my Grade 3s as their intro to colour.

I created another abstract with colour, using some of the techniques from the course. I love the play and unpredictability of abstract.

The Artist's Way

Paula of "Happy Snappy" is hosting a book group working through "The Artist's Way".

I completed the rest of the tasks for Chapter 2. Some of the tasks I rushed through (affirmations, imaginary lives), but several really gave insights. Creating the pie chart really made me see how lopsided some areas of my life are.

I created a list of 20+ favourite activities in my 60 lists book - and I am hoping to add more than the 2 Julia Cameron suggests.

The biggest timewasters for me is being on the computer -blogging (too bad, because I love visiting great blogs) and playing computer games.

I am also going to work on the "Ten Tiny Changes" and try to do one a week.

This week I aim to finish my art room (it's not a studio yet!) With my hubby away for a couple of days this weekend, I attacked the back room and moved out a bed and junk and carted up my art supplies yesterday. Now I will start organizing and setting it up so that I can work upstairs and be able to leave work out, without having to put everything away. This was a major event for me. I am counting this as my artist's date this weekend as it has been my dream for a long time. Yeah!!! I'll post pictures once I am finished.

ATCs

I have been working on 2 swaps and have 6 out of 8 cards done. Most are collage. This coming week I need to finish 2 other swaps as I will be on holidays soon.

Again, flowers and skies were an attraction.

Our baby robins were a daily draw though, and today I got the last photos of them, as they flew the coop, so to speak. I'm sorry to see them go.

The last one to leave perched on the edge of the ladder for the longest time, as if afraid to try its wings. Makes one think about how we face our fears. The mother bird sat on the roof and chirped a lot, as if to encourage him. And then he was gone.

Wishcasting Wednesday

Time once again to cast wishes. Jamie Ridler poses a question each week to encourage us to wish and seek support. This week she asks:

What do you wish to nourish?

As soon as I read the question, I knew that what I wish for is to nurture and nourish my creativity.

While reading a post by Camilla, I was struck by her use of the term her "artist baby" and how we need to be gentle with it. I can so relate. I am taking baby steps towards being an artist and I need to nourish this growing state.

This week I began a journaling course with Christy Tomlinson called "She Had Three Hearts". I am excited by it and learning so much already.

I am also working through "The Artist's Way" with a great group of women. Paula is hosting that and that is a learning process as well.

ABC Wednesday - Alexander Graham Bell

This week at ABC Wednesday, B is our focus letter.

One of the great Canadians is Alexander Graham Bell, considered the inventor of the telephone. He was born in Scotland but came to Canada and settled near Brantford. I have visited his home there and it is fascinating.
Wikipedia states: he"...was an eminent scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator who is credited with inventing the first practical telephone."
His mother and wife were both hard of hearing and one of his young students in Boston where he worked at a School for the deaf was Helen Keller.

60 Lists 60 Weeks

I had not had done much last week on "The Artist's Way". So this morning I read Chapter 2 and worked on a number of tasks. I did not find the chapter as engaging as the first as I do not feel overwhelmed by crazy people - just events. I was really struck though by her assertion that we all need to pay attention. These quotes really resonated with me:

"The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention."

"Each moment is not without its beauty."

"Attention is an act of connection."

I did create a list of time wasters - that's how I looked at it and the biggest was time on the computer! I love blogging and visiting blogs but have overdone it, as I am on holidays. So I have resolved to spend less time and do more art!

I created my list of things I enjoy doing and I realized I do have many in my life, but several not at all.

I used to love crocheting at night and had created a number of afghans. I have several that I have not finished. I can still remember my young son asking (many years ago!) why I wasn't doing that "knitting thing" anymore". Talk about observant. I had gone back to full-time teaching and was tired at night, so crocheting fell by the wayside.

One of the tasks asks us to pick some things from this list that are not in our lives right now. As soon as I read that I thought of crocheting, dancing and playing piano. I am going to try to do more of all three.

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

This week has sped by, in a haze of heat. Even though I did not venture far, due to the heat, I concentrated more on other things rather than art. I have been working a lot on scaling back of my school books and units. I have been reading as well.

I have also started a writing course online through University of Waterloo.

Monday I start a journalling course called "She had Three Hearts" offered by Christy Tomlinson. I love the whole idea of a woman having 3 hearts.

The Artist's Way

I must confess I did not work much on Chapter 2 of the Artist's Way. A group of us are working through the book with Paula hosting.

As I worked on my writing course, the section on "Separating Your Creative and Critical Sides" really resonated with me. By writing the morning papers (they called it free writing), we are able to get rid of most of that critical chatter. The course stresses writing with your creative side totally and then to go back with the analytical/critical side to edit and revise.

I had a wonderful hour in Michael's today - which was my artist's date this week. I spent way too much, but had fun looking for stamps and paints and items on sale.

Colour of Summer

This week the colour purple is what we were to create with.

I worked on my usual magazine collage and the tints of purple.

Then I had fun with paint and different tools. One piece was just paint and a scraper on paper. This will be used for ATCs.

The second piece started with different papers collaged onto a canvas. I then scraped on paint, used stamps. Later I will create a mixed media piece.

Photography

I had fun this week trying to capture the baby robins. They are all neck and beak now! It won't be long before they are on their way. They are so ugly they are cute!

Skies and flowers continue to be my favourite subjects as well.

Shadow Shot Sunday

Time to share shadows once again. With bright sun this week, shadows were easy to find. With this heat, I didn't get much further than my own garden!

Here is an update on our robins - the eggs hatched earlier in the week and they are beak, being fed by both parents.

Simple Things / 60 Lists in 60 Weeks

At "Words of Me", the Friday Prompt is:

What are the the Simple things that make your life oh so good?

I would add, in the summer, especially with this heat! And, it is supposed to continue well into next week!

I love the idea of feeling grateful for those simple things that add joy to your life. My list would include:

Calling my children or friends

Enjoying a swim after my hubby gets home from work

Watching "So You Think You Can Dance" (I'm in heaven as there are 4 nights - 2 for Canada and 2 for the U.S.!)

Creating art

Working on other projects

Reading a book

Taking photos, especially of flowers and skies

Watching the new nest of baby robins develop and grow

(Taken just this morning)

Having air conditioning and overhead fans to keep cool

Eating fresh fruit, especially berries from the garden

Holding hands while we watch a movie

Having an ice cream cone

I could go on - but this made me realize just how many simple pleasures there are and that I really do need to appreciate them!

The heat dome sitting over the US midwest has sent record-breaking temperatures throughout Canada as well today. This week has been progressively hotter and hotter each day. A swim after work has been wonderful - our local outdoor pool has not even been crowded.

But today, the temperature could hit 38 C - with humidex of 45+. Hot for us for sure!

A simple answer this week - I want to try photoshop. I want to be able to take my photos and digitally enhance them. There are so many cool things that can be done on the computer and I want to learn many of them.

Book Whisperer - Chapter 5

"The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller has caught me in its web. I am almost finished reading it, and will have to reread it I am sure!

To be validated in what and how you teach is wonderful. I keep agreeing with her on so many things.

Chapter 5, "Walking the Walk", really stresses the need for both parents and teachers to be reading role models for their children.

I always start the year with a sharing of our favourite books. I bring in many that I have read over the summer and old favourites. Each child gets to share their fav. book and then they are on display for a couple of weeks. I draw a name several times each day during this time and read that child's book. There is always a discussion about that book as well.

I have several bookcases and boxes of books that are just waiting to be read. I always have several on the go. And still I buy more books. Books are essential to me - I would be lost without books.

I try to share my love of reading with my students right from the beginning of the year. I read aloud a lot in the first few weeks, mostly picture books. Then I begin chapter books and read every day after second break. The children soon know the routine and they come in anxious to hear more of the story. I usually start with Judy Moody and Gooney Bird . Then I move onto several of Kate Di Camillo's books - Because of Winn Dixie and "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." I want their heads and hearts to connect with the story. We have had tears and shouts of "No, she can't die" with Edward's Journey. I expect nothing more from these read alouds than to be caught up in the story and to be able to discuss as we go along.

Another book that I found helpful was "Reading Essentials by Regie Routman. Her Chapter 3 was on "Sharing your Reading Life"

I have to share a bit of my reading life:

I finished a tremendous book last night, "Bury Your Dead" by Louise Penny. It is the "One Book, One Community" book for Waterloo Region this year. I was so caught up in it, I read late and finished it last night. If you like mysteries you'll love this. Once I had finished, I found out that this was no. 6 in a series, with no. 7 coming out the end of Aug. Guess what I will be tracking down soon?

ABC Wednesday - A is for Maya Angelou

Round 9 begins at ABC Wednesday!

Last round I focused on places around Canada. This round I want to share quotes from well-known people around the world.

A is for Dr. Maya Angelou

I first came to know Maya Angelou through her book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" many years ago. I have since read other books and her poetry and heard her speak many times. "Phenomenal Woman" is a must-read.

She is considered on of the great voices of America. She is a woman of many talents - a poet, writer of books and plays, an educator and civil-rights activist.

Here are a few of her quotes I treasure:

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up

Time to share artistic endeavours from this past week. I joined in two more challenges and had fun with both. As well, I worked more on Chapter 1 of the Artist's Way.

The Artist's Way

Paula of "Happy Snappy" is leading a group of us in working through the Artist's Way. I much prefer this slower pace. The past 2 weeks we have focused on Chapter 1.

Rereading it this time, I was struck with the affirmations more this time and less on the negatives.

I chose these affirmations to hold onto when those negative beliefs rear up:

I am willing to learn to let myself be creative.

I am allowed to nurture my artist.

Creativity is the creator's will for me.

I am still not writing morning papers every day but I recognize the need for it. When I do, I really feel the negativity being released.

My artist's date this week was by accident. I had to wait for my husband to pick me up downtown and as I wandered around the block, I discovered a new gallery. I had a lovely talk with the owner and she stated that she is always looking for new artists. I loved many of the pieces there and fell in love with, and bought, a gorgeous ornate cross necklace. I will return, maybe with some of my own art.

I did several of the exercises - champions, enemies, imaginary lives and they proved interesting, if a bit of a challenge.

I am looking forward to Chapter 2.

Summer of Colour / GPP #53
Exploring colour through the "Summer of Color" has been fun and a learning experience. This week red was the focus. It is one of my favourite colours.

I completed a colour collage with pictures from magazines:

Then I did the tints of red - I loved the colours created.

Michelle Ward's GPP #53 challenge was termed "Mad Scientist and I have been creating colours through the "Summer of Colour". This week I took one of the pinks I created and named it primrose pink:

I also created a small abstract using red, gold and a bit of blue. Really enjoyed this. I'd like to try a bigger piece next.

Inspiration Avenue
I have seen this challenge site a few times but hadn't participated. When I saw the theme was Picasso, I knew I wanted to take part. Here are 2 works I completed:

The flowers are one of my favourite Picasso pieces. All through university I had this work on my wall.

Full Moon Dreamboard

Friday was the Full Buck Moon and I enjoyed creating my dreamboard for the month ahead.

Shadow Shot Sunday

Shadows are a very interesting target and at times they become an obsession! It is pretty bad when you are visiting a place and you first look for shadows! Others who take part in SSS know that obsession!

Full Moon Dreamboard

Today is the Full Buck Moon and Jamie Ridler challenges us to create a dreamboard for each full moon.

I normally create them at night, but today I felt inspired and created it this afternoon. This time the whole design just happened. I had been collecting images and words all month, but I used more words this time than images.

The Full Buck Moon calls us to "set intentions for bold actions and big dreams."

I had been working with red for the Summer of Colour project and the idea of using tissue paper appealed to me.

I was amazed at just how quickly it came together today. Being bold worked!

This was the last phrase to appear, but it really does state what I am trying to do, and it definitely is a journey to become healthier!

The Book Whisperer - Chap.4

I finally received my copy of "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller yesterday and quickly read the first 4 chapters. I have found a kindred spirit! What I have been doing in my classroom the past 3 years has been validated by her.

As I read authorities on reading and studied for reading courses, I always felt that for a child to succeed as a reader, he or she had to read and read a lot.

Between Miller and the Daily Five, I know what I do is what kids need.

We start the year with 10 minutes of independent reading and by Christmas, my Grade 3 class is usually reading 30 minutes at the beginning of the day. Their only job during this reading time each day is to "read and record". They record their reading each day : Date /Title/ Author/Genre/JR-E-C/No. of stars (their rating up to 5)

I meet with each reader each week for a quick running record if needed and a conference on their reading.

At the end of the year when I have had them fill out a survey, their favourite class activity has always been our independent reading.

Using reader's notebooks is done as well, but never at this time. We read and read and read.

At " Thinking of Teaching ", there is a book study on the book and it has been so interesting to see other teachers excited by Miller and what she writes about reading.

I know many of us teachers get so fed up with all the standardized testing, and new jargon and updated curriculum that is foisted on us each year. There is less and less time for reading, for art, for drama and music. Instead we must prepare kids for tests and we are judged as teachers because of test scores.

What I want for each child coming into my class is to love reading and to feel good about themselves. I want them to explore what their strengths and weaknesses are and to try new things.

I am excited about Miller's book and look forward to finishing the book.

I know I will adopt some of her ideas - like the book frenzy, which I do in a modified way. I have never had a genre requirement for the children. I like the idea of setting a guideline for genres as well as the number requirement.

(With Grade 3s, many are still reading picture books well into the school year, so the number might have to be modified.)

Each week Jamie Ridler asks a very pointed question, one that gets us to look inward and seek out our deepest desires.

This week it is no different. She asks us:

What do you wish to ask for?

As I thought about it this morning, several things flitted through my mind. But, the wish that dominated was that I wish to ask for a kindred spirit, someone to share things with, to laugh with, to do things with.

Since moving here 6 years ago I have met many people through work and church. I am friendly with them, but it doesn't extend much past church or school functions. I miss my old friends but the distance is such that we can't see each other often. Yes, I have a loving husband and we do many things together, but a woman friend is quite different and I miss that.

I tend to be shy, to hang back. I don't push myself on people. As I get older it seems to be more of a challenge to really connect with people on a deeper level. Hence the term "kindred spirit" (from "Anne of Green Gables" one of my favourite books). So I ask for a kindred spirit!

ABC Wednesday - Z is for

Hard to believe but we have reached the end of the alphabet again at ABC Wednesday.

This week we focus on Z, a wee bit of a challenge for places in Canada, but I did locate 3! (Photos care of Google Images)

Zeballos, BC - It is a small town on North Vancouver Island and you'll find lots of wilderness recreation to do. Looks like a place I would love to visit!

There are also 2 tiny towns in Saskatchewan:

and, Zehner.

Both these places are typical of prairie towns in Saskatchewan.

Sunday Weekly Wrap Up

Sunday Weekly Wrap-Up gives me a chance to highlight some of the work I have done this past week, especially for challenges.

The "Summer of Colour" challenge at "Twinkle, Twinkle" was a focus on brown. My first response was ugh! But I played with the colour and had fun with paint and altho I am not enamoured of the colour, it worked out okay in the end.

Here I used a piece of scrunched-up plastic to move brown paint around the page.

This was the usual magazine clips of brown and adding white paint to each layer. I am enjoying these 2 experiments each week.

With some leftover brown and white paint I splotched some ATC cards for backgrounds.

The Artist's Way"

We are halfway through Chapter 1 of "The Artist's Way". I have read through the chapter once but need to go back and reread more thoroughly.

I have started a quote booklet to help me keep track of favourite quotes.

Morning papers continue to be sporadic and done at different times. I am on summer break so my routines have been a wee bit mixed-up! Making lists for "52 Lists in 52 Weeks" (see previous post), made me realize I still have feelings of not being good enough. I have to work on those negative words.

My artist dates this past week have times to create. I am enjoying giving myself time to just play - with paint, and with collage.

I will work on the tasks this week and make more of an effort to do the morning papers.

I had fun with the camera this week and was able to grab another shot of the 2 robin eggs. I still am amazed she laid 2 more eggs! (Sorry for the fuzziness - she was squawking at me from the fence as I hovered over her nest!)

Skies and flowers were again my main focus.

52 Lists in 52 Weeks

One of my favourite past times is blog hopping - going from one blog to another blog. I always discover wonderful bloggers and new challenges. Yesterday was no exception.

I discovered Kellie's blog On the Brink of Something Beautiful, where she provides a great prompt each week for creating 52 Lists in 52 Weeks. They are at Week 6, so it's not too far into the challenge.

I have been looking for some way to celebrate my next birthday, when I turn 60. I am already dreading that birthday! I want to feel more positive, but so far there are only negative feelings!

So when I saw Kellie's challenge, I thought I would adapt it and do 60 lists in 60 weeks. It will extend past my birthday but that is exciting.

At 25, I said there were not many firsts left. How wrong I have been! I want there to be many many more.

This week the list to produce is: What Do I Need To Let Go of?

I need to let go of:

1. negativity/ negative thoughts

2. my extra pounds

3. art and crafts supplies I don't use or need

4. books - I have too, too many

5. things in the house that I don't love or have a use for

6. digital files I don't need

7. guilt from the past

8. magazines - again, I have too many

9. teacher files and books I am not using

10. the feeling of not being good enough

I have started a scrapbook for the lists and will add extras as I need. I plan to catch up on the 5 other lists from Kellie's blog. What a great idea! If you'd like to join in the fun check it out here.

Shadow Shot Sunday

It,s that special time of the week to share shadows. So many times these shadows are more interesting than the original object.
Here are a few from my garden:

I had to include a shot of our old girl Fluffy. She is now 19! The arm in the photo is from our concrete jockey.

And would you believe, we have a new nest on the ladder on our porch and 2 new eggs! ! have never seen that before - a second nest of eggs especially so late!
