SOL#14 - March 14th

Today is day 14 of the Slice of Life March, the writing challenge sponsored and run by Stacey and Ruth of "Two Writing Teachers". Inspiration for each day comes in different ways - sometimes more difficult than others.

Yesterday was a history-making day in the Catholic church. A New World Pope was chosen - as the headlines in our local paper put it. I had watched the news over the last few days, especially as a cardinal from Canada seemed to be in the running.

I am not Catholic, although mu husband is. One of my dearest friends from childhood  is as well and I spent much time in her home growing up. I had many faith discussions with her parents and uncle, who was a priest.

So, i along with millions of people, followed the news. I will be very interesting to see what this new pope, Francis I will do for the church. There are many areas that need to be addresses. As many have said, Francis is a holy man, a humble man. Maybe this will be a breath of fresh spirituality in the church.

I think you are right that he is a holy man. I think he was wise to ask the people to pray for him. He faces many challenges.

I am not Catholic either, but have many friends and relatives who are, so I am quite familiar with it. I found myself waitng for the announcement of the Pope...and loved the name he chose...Francis...as I love the Prayer of St. Francis. I hope he will be able to heal some of the pain that the Catholic church has had. He does seem like a wise and kind man. Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/

I'm not Catholic either, but I'm always fascinated by this stuff Today one person told me that the selection of the pope was totally political-- that the pope had to be selected from Latin America, because that was where the greatest percentage of Catholics were. Then I heard on the radio that the new pope had gone to the hotel and picked up his clothes and paid his own bill, then selected his car- a simple Vatican car, whatever that was. Interesting to see all of the pieces come together.
