SkyWatch Friday

Most of this week the skies have been dull and cloudy. The snow is disappearing and we should have rain (!) the next couple of days! I was able to get a few interesting shots though:

A few weeks ago I was able to capture these clouds:

Have a very Happy New Year!

ABC Wednesday - X is for x-cellant artists!

This week the letter for ABC Wednesday was a toughie! How many artists do you think start with X? Not many! But I was able to find a family - the Xavery family as well as Chinese artists!

Jan Baptist Xavery -(1697-1742) was a Flemish sculptor.

Pieter Xavery -(1647-1674?) was a Flemish sculptor as well

Frans and Jacob Xavery - sons of Jan Baptist - both Dutch painters

Xu Wei -(1521-1593) - was a Ming Chinese painter, dramatist and poet. He is considered the founder of modern painting in China.

Be sure to visit the great participants here.

SkyWatch Friday

"There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky;
there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul"
Victor Hugo

I have always been drawn to the spectacle of the sky, in all its changing faces. Sky Watch Friday gives us all a chance to share those spectacles.

ABC Wednesday - W is for Wonderful Artists

Once again it is time for ABC Wednesday - that fun, weekly, alphabetical meme.
W is our focus for the week - hard to believe we are so near the end!

There are so many wonderful "W" artists:

Andy Warhol -( 1928 – 1987) was an American painter, filmmaker and printmaker. He started as an illustrator and was soon the leading figure in Pop Art.

James Whistler - (1834 1903) - an American painter, although he lived and worked in Britain. His most famous painting was one dubbed "Whistler's Mother".

Andrew Wyeth - (1917-2009) - an American painter, often referred to as the "Painter of the People". He was mainly a realist painter and his subjects were often the people and land around him.

Christina's World - one of his most famous pieces.

and then 2 Canadians:

Homer Watson- (1855-1936) was a Canadian landscape painter

(In fact, a gallery in his name is in Kitchener - 20 minutes from my home- and offers art courses, as well as an opportunity for artists to show their work)

Joyce Wieland -(1931-1998) -was a filmmaker as well as a mixed media artist.

One of her most famous pieces - a quilted piece.

And of course:
Wishing all of you a Wonderful Christmas

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas One and All!

Christmas is only days away! I am now on 2 weeks of holidays! Yeah! I do plan to rest and try to get rid of this cold/cough. But I also want to celebrate the season and have plans in the works.

I took part in several gift swaps online this season.
The Secret Santa through Purple Sparkle was fun and I just received a lovely gift today from Scotland! The gifts are gorgeous! Thanks so much to my Secret Santa!

I also did the Colour Ornament Swap with Louise Gale. 2 of 3 gifts have arrived and they are lovely ornaments. Thanks so much ladies!

This is what I made and sent out.

Christmas is a special time. I love all the carol singing, the decorated trees, the loving spirit, the special Church services, the searching for the perfect gifts, the big family dinners, the baking - I just love this season. Here are a few of my favourite decorations around our home:

(These are just a small part of our animated figures collection! The grandkids love them!)

May everyone have a blessed Christmas, filled with love and joy!

ABC Wednesday - V is for Very Talented Artists

This week at ABC Wednesday, the fun meme that takes us through the alphabet, one letter at a time, V is the letter to focus on.

First and foremost,

Vincent Van Gogh - a tortured artist, who never became famous until after his death. His artwork can be seen everywhere now.

Johannes Vermeer -(1632-1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle class life

His painting of the young girl with an earring inspired a great book (by the same name)

Be sure to visit all the great participants here.

It is Shadow Shot time. It is also 2 weeks until Christmas! So, I decided to combine the two - here are some shadows for the season.

This is our creche atop our TV/bookshelf - the figures are up to a foot high.

2 of our poinsettias, with a bit of shadow.

Be sure to check out Hey Harriet!, such a fun meme hosted by Tracy.

ABC Wednesday - U is for a Trio of Artists

Time once again for ABC Wednesday - the must-do, fun meme of playing with letters of the alphabet. We are almost at an end - U is our focus this week.

And what a challenge - there were so few "U" artists! I chose 3 - all unknown to me. So I learned a bit this week!

Maurice Utrillo -(1883-1955) was a French painter who specialized in cityscapes

Janice Udell - a Canadian painter, currently living and working in Newfoundland

Judas Ullulaq - (1937-99) - an Inuit sculptor

Be sure to visit the great participants here, to see their take on U!

Shadow Shot Sunday

This morning began bright and sunny - a change from most of the week. So I was able to capture a few shadows:

(Have to include something for the season - our almost life size creche!)

I have to put in one of our cat Fluffy - she actually let me photograph her last night, with a flash!

Be sure to visit the great shadow-chasers at Hey Harriet!, a fabulous weekly meme!

Christmas Countdown and Reverb 10

Reverb 10

I started last year really looking at the year in review and looking forward. I found it a very valuable exercise.
Today I discovered and joined "Reverb 10":

"Reverb 10 is an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. Use the end of your year as an opportunity to reflect on what's happened, and to send out reverberations for the year ahead."

There will be a prompt a day through December. Here are my first 2 responses:

December 1 One Word.Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you? (author: Gwen Bell)

My word for 2010 was YES. I had hoped this word would help me be more open to all that was available and to try new things.
This year did bring new things – a trip to Mexico, a mixed media course were the biggest of those.
Looking back though, the word I would choose to describe the year would be Emerging. I feel like I have been emerging from the veil of grief, that my creativity is emerging and I am emerging from under the weight of pain and clutter.

I have already chosen my word for 2011 – BALANCE. The notion of one’s life having 4 rooms appeals very much to me and I would like these rooms to be balanced in my life.

December 2 Writing.
What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it?(Author: Leo Babauta)

Each day life gets in the way! I teach, I cook, I spend sometime with my hubby, I spend sometime online, I read the paper or magazines, I do homework, I watch a bit of TV (maybe).
Do I write? Not very often. My desire right now though, is to create art. I am definitely doing it more now than a year ago. Next year, I hope it will have become a regular habit.

Christmas Countdown:

December 2 - Today was creating lists - for Christmas cards, Christmas baking, for gift giving.

It was time for setting up Christmas centres at school so the children have some time to create when they have finished their work for the day.
It was also a time to slow down and listen - to Christmas carols.

One song in particular I have been playing and listening to every day this week, since it was sent to me.
