ABC Wednesday - Y is for Yardstick

Once again it is time to tackle a letter of the alphabet. This week it is Y - we are so close to the end! It has been a fun journey - here's hoping we will continue with another round of ABC Wednesday!

Y stands for so many things but I chose yardstick. Okay, there's nothing really flashy about it but it is a very useful tool. I use one at school and for art.
Well, actually I use a metrestick but usually call it a yardstick. I was brought up with inches, feet and yards and still measure that way when not at school!

The big question: Which is longer - a yardstick or a metrestick??

Give up? It is a metrestick!
A yardstick is 3 feet or 36 inches long. A metrestick is approximately 3,2808 feet long.

A metre stick is equal to: 39.4 inches
100 centimetres
1000millimetres.

You know those loose yardsticks they use in sewing (I don't know their proper name, but you know what I mean)? I own one of those 'ribbons' with feet and inches on one side and centimeters on the other. My father was hanging my curtains and needed to measure out the curtain rails. But instead of going from 0 to 15 cm, he counted down from 1.50m to 1.35m. Not realising the 'ribbon' was about 3 cm longer than the ordinary Dutch ones, because of the inches! He had to go and buy a new curtain rail and measure again...

Moast of the yardsticks I see in the US are meter sticks, with both inches and millimeters -

I never thought about the word Yardstick. A great one for Y. Interesting information too.

I'm hopeless when it comes to metric measurements! I do know yardsticks are good for retrieving things that slip down behind the washer and dryer!

What a clever entry of yours ! Indeed a bit of a challenge to measure things with different means, over there and here, on "old Europe". Please have a wonderful Wednesday.

Sure would make things easier when traveling if everyone used the same measurement system. Same with litres and gallons, miles and kilometers, too. My poor brain can't compute as quickly as it used to!

I totally and completely got the answer wrong. Darn it : )

Super fun post! Thanks for some new knowledge.

How interesting! I rarely measure anything and when I do, it's generally wrong! Clever idea for Y!

A yard stick is very useful. In my art work I could use a foot and a half stick. 12" is never long enough for many of my pictures and a yard stick is far too long. Maybe I should go into business producing them.

Great choice and very informative. I'd like to say I'll remember all of it but I'm sure all I'll remember is the meterstick is longer!

I'm glad I'm not the only one still thinking in feet and inches. Even so, small children still talk about their daddies being 6' tall!
