ABC Wednesday - T is for Thoroughbreds

This week at ABC Wednesday, T is our letter of focus.

With the Belmont Stakes being run this weekend, I thought that I would look at thoroughbreds. They are magnificent, beautiful athletes.

"The Thoroughbred as it is known today was first developed in 17th and 18th century England, when native mares were crossbred with imported Arabian stallions. All modern Thoroughbreds can trace their pedigrees to three stallions originally imported." (for more information refer to Wikipedia's article that also looks at the weakness of this animal and the dangers of racing)

The Belmont is the third race in the run for the Triple Crown. The Kentucky Derby is considered the race in horse racing and it the crown jewel of the three. The Preakness was the second.

Once again there was no Triple Crown winner. Secretariat, one of the last of the Triple Crown winners, was an exceptional thoroughbred. Look out for the movie this summer on this remarkable horse.

Be sure to visit the other great paricipants here.

Great word for the T day, Bev! I love horses and we owned a couple of Arabians when the kids were young. Hope your week is going well. Enjoy!

Bev, I have an off-the-track thoroughbred, "Quad", a descendant of the great Secretariat AND Affirmed! I have traced his heritage back to the three original thoroughbred stallions. He is a grey TB, never won a race in 7 tries, and was given to a horse rescue. I got him from the rescue. He's too mellow to be a racehorse. My other thoroughbred, a chestnut mare, however, has the heart of a champion and LOVES to run! She should have been the race horse! Alas, she was on a slaughter-bound feedlot in WA state when I found her photo online at a rescue site and adopted her. I don't ride her as she isn't rideable (she rears), but she and I have a special understanding. It took me two years to get her to allow me to touch her head and ears. Come see Gigondas on my blog: http://deserthorses.blogspot.com You can also see Quad there. I actually have 5 horses. Gosh, I guess I should do "thoroughbred", too!

Bev, I'm now following your blog! I teach 3rd grade, too! HA! I have to support my horse-habit!

Great post for T week. I love watching these races but have not been to see any in person. I always hope to go to the derby as I am close to Kentucky. Some day...

Truly fascinating! I've been known to watch races and even bet on a few at the local track - back in the old days. Excellent T.

Ah, they are so beautiful, aren't they? And quite thrilling to stand near the rails and feel the ground shake as they thunder by. I don't go to the races very often, I've been perhaps five times in my life, but it's something you don't forget.

Thoroughbreds are such beautiful horses. It breaks my heart when one gets injured while racing. Very beautiful capture of these magnificent creatures.

I've always been leery about horses ever since my daughter was thrown when she was 9 years old. But they are beautiful to watch, whether out in the fields or racing at a stadium.

The aristocrats of the horse world. The stable boys and girls make them look so wonderful groomed.

Wonderful ideas for T words! Thoroughbred horses are beautiful to watch and who doesn't get a little excited at the possibility of another Triple Crown winner at the beginning of the season?
